The idea for this image came to me while I was camping. Isolated in the Michigan woods, I would sit around the campfire and let me mind wander. I came up with "The Fears That Haunt Me" on one such occasion. I was inspired to shoot "Into the Wild" while drinking coffee at the campsite and looking at where the clearing met the deep woods.
I did not get the opportunity to shoot this idea while on vacation, but I knew areas around home that would suit the scene. When I proposed the concept to Shannon, she loved the idea of shooting something darker and scarier.
There are a few lessons here:
Okay, so I know I said I tried to stay away from a sexy mermaid, but when Shannon said she wanted to be a mermaid, I couldn't say "no." She's worked with me on so many of my concepts that doing a mermaid shoot for her was the least I could do as a thank you.
With her red hair, she's perfect for Ariel in the Disney version of "The Little Mermaid." We both love the same scene with Ariel singing on the rocks with the waves crashing around her. But, alas, we live in Michigan and an coastal ocean town would have those elements. Instead of recreating the scene, we went with just a beach and water look. We met early in the morning to capture the mist rising from the lake and the beautiful morning light.

I'm just going to let the images speak for themselves on this one.

I've been delving into darker themes lately, trying to explore fears and nightmares. So, while on vacation, a friend suggested I work with Kara, who lives in the area. After already spending a good part of the week in the woods, I was feeling particularly inspired to shoot something dark and foreboding.
This dark imagery is a departure from my usual work. However, it's always good to explore different areas of creativity. Get out of your comfort zone.
